As Memorial Day quickly approaches, the 2nd Annual “Field of Honor” will soon be erected in the field located at Akron Elementary School. While living near Fort Bragg, my husband, Nicholas Patterson, was honored at the Field of Honor in Fayetteville, NC. I was deeply moved by the vast amount of soldiers who were honored and remembered at this field. When I moved back to Indiana, I knew this was something that I wanted to bring to our local soldiers. Being from a community that is so rich in its support of our local troops and veterans, I wanted to be able to show my gratitude back to those who have served our country well.
Last year, I had the esteemed honor to help put up over 200 American Flags to honor veterans from every branch of the military. It was a humbling experience which showed an outpour of support from many local businesses, agencies, and individuals. Their support helped to make the memorial a display to be observed by people from all over Northern Indiana.
Once again, I am asking the community to support your troops by sponsoring a flag at the “Field of Honor”. Each flag is displayed with the name of the soldier or veteran being honored and remembered. The “Field of Honor” will be displayed from July 1st through July 12th. Orders will begin on Memorial Day, May 25, 2009. Proceeds from the “Field of Honor” help to support the Nick Patterson Memorial Fund which helps support local students attend athletic camps. Proceeds also help support the Wounded Warrior Project which seeks to help soldiers who have been wounded in war as well as their families.
The “Field of Honor” is more than just a field of flags. It’s a display that honors the many sacrifices made by our men and women in the military. If interested in ordering, volunteering, or for questions, please contact me at pattersonjayme@yahoo.com
